We are a welcoming community formed in Christ, committed to sharing his love with others – with feet that carry us out into the world, with hands that serve, and with hearts in fellowship and faith.
Dear Friends,
During a recent Lenten Supper Worship Service, Sally Teschon talked about how a particular book had been instrumental in helping her understand her faith journey. The book, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene Peterson, makes the case that our formation as followers of Jesus is not instantaneous. Rather, it takes place over time, as the Christian disciple engages with God by spending time in scripture and prayer, allowing God to shape us into the people God would have us become. It is truly a long obedience in the same direction.
As I mentioned following Sally’s talk, Eugene Peterson is one of my favorite authors, and this particular book is one of my favorite Eugene Peterson books. Thus, it occurred to me that we should offer a study of A Long Obedience. I say “we” because I have asked Sally to co-lead the study with me, and she has graciously agreed to do so.
We will meet in the Minnema Room, beginning Wednesday, April 29. As in the past, the study will be offered Wednesdays at noon (for those who prefer not to drive at night) and Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. (for those who may work during the day).
A Long Obedience in the Same Direction can be purchased wherever you order your books. At Christianbook.com the cost is $13.39 plus shipping. Here is the schedule of readings we will discuss each week:
Please let me know by Sunday, April 26 if you plan to participate and whether you plan to attend the noon or 7:00 p.m. session. As always, friends are welcome!
Grace and peace,
Bruce
